This is a custom made bench with a crazy look and a warm heart. Built entirely from reclaimed iron and locally sourced wood. The wood was harvested from fallen trees 45miles from my shop. The legs are live edge hard maple. The top is dark walnut. The top rests on hard maple cross supports joined with lap joints. The only fasteners on this entire bench are the railroad spikes used on the outside of the wood to hold the iron grate in place. This bench is built sturdy and strong using wood joinery techniques. The iron grate is what supports the legs apart. The top is made of dark walnut slats that are held on with maple pegs. The bench has 5 coats of clear polyurethane and is suitable for outdoor use. It will need to be touched up down the line if it’s out in the elements, as the sun will break the finish down eventually.
This bench was crafted with mallet and chisel. Artistry and great design were the driving factors. Building something that will stand the test of time is the result. A finger may have been cut, but I can tell you that no corners were ever cut. This bench can be taken apart and broken down to its individual parts, which is how it will be shipped. The entire top is one piece.
The process of making this bench was very much enjoyed. It doesn’t get much better than starting with a tree and ending with a bench. A job well done. A place to rest.
