This is a rare antique mortise scribe gauge from the 1800s. The worn markings on one side read M.M. Brainard, Green River NY. It has nice ornate brass inlays. I’ve only seen one other version with this brand name on it. That one was made of rosewood, but this one is not. So I’m not sure of the type of wood, but it’s solid. The tool is in working order with good patina. The nibs are worn some but still do mark very well. This is a tool that’s solid enough to go to work and ornate enough to be displayed on a shelf. A testament to when people used there hands to work with quality tools.
